Design Details for Dining

Great season we are entering. It's so nice to begin this blog entry around Thanksgiving time. I really love Thanksgiving for many reasons. Although my own family is slim, it is still a joy to celebrate the season with thanks in mind and heart for our great relationships, accomplishments and blessings that filled in our year thus far. It's really true that focusing on the good things in your life will multiple your future successes. I know it's hard right now, but again, it's like the design vision board phenomenon. Set your goal images, and watch them materialize in the most unexpected ways. Think about a "Bountiful Harvest Dinner" this season and decorate for it.

It's only appropriate that we speak about preparing your home for the holidays and exploring and enjoying the ritual of decorating your dining table. Now that you've set the scene in your main room with some dynamic artwork to enhance the view for yourself and your visitors, let's delve into some design details. Table settings are really creative these days. So much to choose from in the home market place to fill in those areas of your table that need some punch. Fabric runners are so elegant to use in lieu of placemats, and they are come in many sizes and colors or can be custom designed as you can see from my photos here. Think about using 2 narrow runners on a wider top table, or an extra wide runner which will eliminate those placemats. Start with your best dinnerware or china, then add some great charger plates under them to add depth, texture and color. Gem colors are prevalent out there in charger plates, glassware, candleholders, candles, and vases in colors of wine, emerald green, butterscotch, eggplant, pumpkin, cobalt, gold and espresso. These solid colors will work with most dinnerware designs. The appropriate style napkins will ceremoniously fall and fold into place either in wine glasses peaking their heads up towards the ceiling or traditionally relaxing under the dutiful silverware or goldware. Then add some jewelry to the table in your napkin rings and place card holders. While you're at it, add some jewelry to the arms of your chandelier as well and create even more conversation. You can change out the shades on your chandelier to a rich warm red or bronze silk to add more ambiance.

When I was doing custom model home work, one mandate that came from the President of our corporate office was: "Please add one fun item to each room." I love that concept, because fun is always in! There's even a website devoted to the fun theory. It not only sells a model home but it creates enjoyable experiences which open up the mind to new ideas, while pumping up our serotonin levels!

So, finally, place a grand elegant centerpiece or a series of 2,3 or 4 similar pieces on your table, (traditional, modern, seriously gorgeous or totally fun), light the candles, turn up the music, and enjoy a designer delicious meal with friends and family.

See you next month.
