It's nearing the Holidays and we all know what that means. Lots of opportunities to try out some new recipes, have more dinner parties and celebrate the season. It's also time to move furniture and accessories around to dress up our homes to make room for Christmas trees, Menorahs, Nativity Scenes; and let's not forget, visiting family members and friends from near or afar. It is no wonder we love this time, with its spiritual meaning first, and also for the buzz of activity and feel good tasks we immerse ourselves in. These tasks are all creatively driven and they make us natural born decorators during a magical time when we are all on the go. Here are but a few of my interior design ideas to add to your list.
LIGHT Let there be light in our lives. Candles of course, as many as you like, in one multi candelabra holder, menorah or in separate holders. T'is the season for candles and prayers. Choose prayers this year over presents and place candles in holders anywhere you wish to create an atmosphere of tranquility. Light those candles up and be there in the quiet of the moment, reflecting upon any and all good things, our loved ones, our country and hopes and dreams. Illumination is the first key to solving problems. I also love the look of crystals hanging from the arms of chandeliers, adding more reflected light around the dinner table. Both chic and romantic!
DECOR BOXES Purchase some lovely decorated boxes (sturdy ones) which can be used every holiday. This conserves on wrapping paper(green idea), and place whatever size items you have in them. Leave some boxes empty! It saves money and still looks festive. Abundance starts in the mind and heart and creates out from there.
ADD A THEME Add an additional theme to your Christmas tree each year by placing 3-4 new items which touch your heart for some reason. Last year I found floral hand-painted ornaments which reflected my love of the roses I see in the backyard area every day. I bought them on sale right before Christmas. They were a gift in themselves, and they worked great with my other ornaments.
ELEMENT OF SURPRISE Move your decorations around each year. Don't set up everything the same way each year. Variety is the real spice of life, especially during Holiday time. The element of surprise when your family and friends find your large Santa Claus now on the Foyer table greeting them as they enter (instead of on the hearth), will make them chuckle (sorry, pun intended). Re-energize your spaces with placement changes.
NEW FURNITURE LAYOUTS Christmas trees sometimes dictate furniture be moved around to accomodate them. Get your furniture mover pads out and enjoy the change around. Oftentimes it will open your eyes to a new layout which you hadn't considered, and that you will like better. As you prepare the guest bedrooms for guests, simplify the furniture pieces in there to allow for better room flow.
PHOTOS Bring out all the photos of your friends and family which you've collected through the last year and place them in frames on your Foyer table, LR mantle, or top of Piano. Watch the big smiles on your guests' faces. People are your ultimate blessings in times of trouble. Appreciate them, cherish them and tell them you do by showcasing them as the stars of your life.
PILLOWS Add some holiday cheer to your covered front or back porch area on benches, loveseats or rockers with seasonal theme pillows. Create an outdoor room to greet your guests this holiday and extend your own living space. Seasonal pillow changes on your indoor upholstery also is a great way to give your room a design facelift.
COLORS Richer in Red, Healthy in Green, Good as Gold, Sensational in Silver, True as Blue, Sacred in Purple and Light by White. So many variations of these colors exist, like wine, berry, fuschia, coraltone, sage, lime, emerald, teal, aqua, etc. and more. Don't be afraid to lighten up or darken your existing color scheme by adding in slight color variations into your theme. I have added some purple ornaments recently to my tree. A regal touch.
MUSIC Last on my list but should have been first! That's OK, you know the verse, "so the last will be first and the first will be last". I LOVE music of all kinds. Fill the room with melodic music this season and always. I know this goes without saying.
Interior Design Blessings to all and to all a Good Night!
